A dental hygiene appointment is a thorough professional clean that lifts away the plaque and hardened tartar you cannot shift at home, alongside a full check of your gum health. Most adults with healthy gums book one every 6 to 9 months. Here is what one involves at our Battersea practice, from the first look to what to expect for the rest of the day.
Most patients find it satisfying, if a little ticklish and sensitive in places, and leave with teeth that feel noticeably smoother and fresher.
It isn’t just a polish. Our experienced hygienists use every hygiene appointment to check for early signs of gum issues, offer personalised home care tips and help you maintain a healthy smile between visits.
Whether it’s your first hygiene visit or your tenth, you’ll leave knowing exactly what to do next. If you are new to the practice, your hygiene appointment usually follows a new patient examination, so we have a full picture of your mouth before we start.
More than a clean
While the immediate result is a sparkling clean feeling, every hygiene appointment at Vere Dental is a full gum health check. Our hygienists do not just clean, they assess.
At each visit, they:
Check your gum condition, looking for signs of inflammation, bleeding or recession
Measure pocket depths around each tooth to monitor gum health
Record any areas of concern in your notes for future reference
Review your home care routine and suggest improvements
Update your risk profile for gum disease based on what they find
This means that even if your teeth feel fine, we’re always looking ahead and catching small issues before they become bigger problems. Our approach goes beyond the standard clean, so you are not just getting a surface polish but a full assessment that supports your long term oral health. If you would like to read more about the link between healthy gums and the rest of your body, we cover it in our article on gum health and wellbeing.

Your appointment step by step
Here’s exactly what to expect when you settle into the chair at our Battersea practice.
1. The initial chat
We start with a quick conversation about your oral health since your last visit. Have you noticed any bleeding when brushing? Any sensitivity? Changes in your routine? This helps our hygienists understand what to focus on during your appointment.
2. The first look
Your hygienist will examine your gums using a small mirror and a gum probe, a thin and gentle instrument that measures the pockets between your teeth and gums. This can feel like light pressure. They’ll note any areas where gums might be inflamed or receding.
3. Plaque and tartar removal
This is where the real work happens. Using an air polisher (high velocity powder and water to lift away plaque and bacteria), an ultrasonic scaler (which vibrates at high speed to break down hardened tartar) and hand scalers (for more delicate areas), our hygienists carefully remove plaque and calculus from above and below the gumline. You’ll hear a humming sound and feel vibrations.
The ultrasonic scaler also sprays a fine mist of water, which helps wash away debris and keeps the area cool. If you have sensitive teeth, we can numb your gums, use desensitising varnishes, adjust the power or use more hand scaling to keep you comfortable.
4. Polishing
Once all the tartar is gone, we use a rotating polisher with a soft brush and a polishing paste to remove surface stains from coffee, tea or smoking. This step leaves your teeth feeling incredibly smooth and often a shade or two brighter. The polisher moves quickly but gently, so it might feel a little strange at first, but it isn’t painful.
5. Flossing and final checks
We floss between your teeth to clear anything loosened during the clean, then run a final check to make sure everything looks clean and healthy.
6. Personalised advice
Before you leave, our team will:
Show you any areas you might be missing when brushing at home
Recommend tools or techniques tailored to your needs, such as interdental brushes, water flossers or a specific brushing method
Discuss how often you should return based on your gum health
Answer any questions you have about your oral care routine
You’ll leave with a clear plan for maintaining your smile until your next visit.
How often should you come in
This is the question we hear most often, and the answer is more personalised than you might think.
For most adults with healthy gums, we recommend a hygiene appointment every 6 to 9 months. This interval helps prevent the buildup of tartar and keeps gum disease at bay.
However, we may suggest a shorter interval, such as every 3 to 4 months, if:
You have a history of gum disease or are currently being treated for it
You build up tartar quickly, as some people’s saliva chemistry makes them more prone to calculus
You have crowded teeth that are harder to clean at home
You smoke or have diabetes, both of which can affect gum health
You wear fixed braces or clear aligners, or you have dental implants that need extra attention
Conversely, if your gums are in excellent condition and you’re meticulous with your home care, we might extend your recall to 12 months. But this is less common, and most people benefit from that twice yearly professional clean.
Our hygienists will always explain their recommendation so you understand why a particular interval is best for you.

What we look for in your gums
Your gum health is a major focus of every hygiene appointment. Here’s what we are looking for.
Bleeding gums. Even slight bleeding when probing can be an early sign of gingivitis, or gum inflammation. If we spot this, we’ll spend extra time cleaning those areas and give you targeted advice to improve your gum health at home.
Swelling or redness. Healthy gums should be pink and firm. Any puffiness or discolouration is a sign we’ll investigate further.
Pocket depths. Deeper pockets, over 3mm, can indicate gum disease. We’ll measure and record these to monitor any changes over time.
If we find bleeding or other concerns, we’ll often recommend a follow up appointment in 3 months to reassess your gums. In most cases, improved home care and a professional clean can reverse early gum issues before they progress. Where pockets deeper than 3mm are present, we refer you on for treatment for gum disease with our periodontist.

Children and teenagers
At Vere Dental, our hygienists see children from an early age.
For younger children, we recommend they see one of our dentists first, who can then refer them to a hygienist if appropriate. This means we are providing age appropriate care and building positive associations with dental visits from the start. You can read more about children’s dentistry at our Battersea practice.
Teenagers, in particular, can benefit from hygiene appointments as they navigate braces, wisdom teeth or changes in their oral care routines. Our hygienists are great at putting young patients at ease and helping them establish lifelong habits.
After your appointment
For the rest of the day
Your teeth may feel slightly sensitive to hot or cold for a few hours, especially if you had a lot of tartar removed. This is normal and should subside quickly.
Your gums might feel a little tender, and again this is temporary and a sign that any inflammation is being addressed.
You might notice slight bleeding when brushing later that week. This can happen if your gums were a little inflamed before the appointment. It should stop within 7 days if you keep up good day to day habits, including cleaning between your teeth.
Your mouth will feel fresher and cleaner, and many patients say it’s the best their teeth have felt in ages.
At home
Wait an hour after your hygiene appointment before eating or drinking anything other than water, especially if you had a fluoride treatment. This gives any applied products time to work.
After that, stick to your usual brushing routine.
Between visits
To keep your teeth and gums in top condition until your next appointment:
Brush twice a day for two minutes with a fluoride toothpaste
Clean between your teeth daily with floss or interdental brushes, which removes plaque your toothbrush can’t reach
Stay hydrated and limit sugary snacks and drinks
Popular questions about hygiene appointments
Does it hurt?
For most patients, hygiene appointments are comfortable and pain free. You might feel some light pressure during scaling, especially if you have sensitive areas, and the ultrasonic scaler can feel a little tickly. If you have very sensitive teeth or gums, let us know, because we can use more hand scaling, adjust our technique or apply a numbing gel to keep you comfortable.
If you have significant gum disease or haven’t been to a hygienist in a long time, your first appointment might feel more sensitive. This usually improves with regular visits as your gums become healthier.
Will it whiten my teeth?
A hygiene appointment will remove surface stains from food, drink and smoking, so your teeth may appear a shade or two lighter afterwards. It isn’t a whitening treatment though. It restores your teeth to their natural colour by removing discolouration on the surface.
If you want to go lighter than your natural shade, we offer professional teeth whitening as a separate treatment. Your hygienist can talk you through the options during your appointment.
Do I need to see a dentist too?
Our hygienists work as part of your wider dental care team. We offer direct access, which means you can see one of our hygienists without seeing a dentist here first. Hygienists do work to a dentist’s prescription though, and they do not diagnose dental problems or other conditions in the mouth. We recommend seeing a dentist at least once a year for a full check up, which covers examining your teeth for decay, checking any fillings or crowns and screening for oral cancer.
Our booking team can advise you on the best approach when you call.
Why did my gums bleed afterwards?
Bleeding after a hygiene appointment can happen if your gums were already inflamed before your visit. The cleaning process can temporarily disturb the gum tissue, which leads to bleeding when you brush later that day.
This is usually nothing to worry about and should stop within the week. If bleeding persists, it might be a sign that your gums need more frequent attention, and your hygienist will discuss that with you.
To minimise bleeding, keep brushing as normal and make sure you clean between your teeth every day.
