What to expect from a teeth whitening?

We always recommend to look at photos from yourself when you were a teenager. Whitening will revive your natrually whitest shade and give your enamel back to life.

"Why should I whiten my teeth?"

No one has to whiten their teeth but have you ever looked in the mirror and wished your smile looked just a bit brighter? You’re not alone. Many people turn to teeth whitening as a simple, effective way to enhance their appearance and boost their confidence.

_

Over time, our teeth can become stained from everyday habits like drinking coffee, tea, or red wine — or even just from aging. While brushing and flossing are essential, they can only go so far in removing deep stains. That’s where professional teeth whitening comes in.

_

A teeth whitening procedure from your dentist is a safe and gentle way to significantly brighten your smile. It’s like a quick refresh for your teeth — helping you achieve that radiant, confident look you’ve always wanted.

Whether you're preparing for a big event, looking to refresh your appearance, or just want to feel better about your smile, whitening your teeth can make a noticeable difference. Plus, treatments at your dental office offer results that are far more effective, far safer, and longer-lasting than over-the-counter options.

If you’ve ever searched for "teeth whitening near me," you’re probably already aware of how popular and accessible this treatment has become. And for good reason — it's one of the fastest and most affordable ways to improve your smile.

So, if you're considering a brighter smile, speak with your dentist about a whitening of teeth treatment that’s tailored to your needs.

Pros, Cons & Risks of Home whitening

It is important to know that risks are significantly reduced when supervised by a dental professional. Adverse effects are rare when supervised by a dental professional and using evidence-based protocols.

At our Battersea dental practice, we prioritise your safety. To improve the predictability of your results, we aim to always use a science-based approach.

Whether you’re preparing for a special occasion or simply want to refresh your smile, we’re here to guide you every step of the way.

We use a 2 to 4-week whitening protocol and add the use of GC Tooth Mousse and high-fluoride toothpaste— this method is backed by published research.

Pros: Why At-Home Whitening Works

Evidence-Based Results: Systematic reviews confirm that professionally prescribed at-home whitening achieves comparable results to in-office treatments for most patients, with proper adherence (Cochrane Oral Health, 2020).

Controlled & Safe: Unlike unregulated over-the-counter products, our programme uses custom-fitted trays and monitored peroxide concentrations to minimise risks.

Convenience Without Compromise: Whitening fits into your routine, with check-ins from our Battersea dental team to ensure progress and safety.

Long-Term Maintenance: Research shows that post-whitening care (including fluoride and CPP-ACP) extends results and protects tooth structure.

Cons and Risks: What the Data Shows

⚠️ Temporary Sensitivity - Mostly to cold, we can minimize this risk by prescribing desensitising agents and adjust protocols as needed.

⚠️ Correct use is crucial to achieve the wanted results.

⚠️ Gum Irritation: Poorly fitted trays can cause irritation. We avoid this by making custom in-house trays to try to reduce this risk as much as possible, we also explain to you how you can minimize this risk at home (International Journal of Dental Hygiene, 2021).

⚠️ Not Suitable for Everyone: Patients with severe enamel defects including tooth decay, or pregnancy may not be able to whiten their teeth.

⚠️ Individual Variability: Results depend on factors like tooth shade, diet, and oral hygiene. We set realistic expectations during your consultation.

Pros: Why Choose Zoom?

✅ Rapid Results & Convenience: Just one in-chair session (between 1.5h to 2h) followed by 3–7 days of at-home touch-ups—ideal for busy lifestyles. Research shows that post-whitening care (including fluoride and CPP-ACP) extends results and protects tooth structure.

✅ Dentist-Controlled: Unlike unregulated over-the-counter products, our programme uses custom-fitted trays and monitored peroxide concentrations to minimise risks.

✅ Long-Lasting: Results last 6–12 months with proper maintenance (avoide staining foods/drinks but use fluoride toothpaste).

Cons and Risks

⚠️ Temporary Sensitivity: Mostly to cold, we can minimize this risk by prescribing desensitising agents and adjust protocols as needed.

⚠️ Gum Irritation: Rare, but possible if soft tissues aren’t properly isolated. Our team uses gum barriers to prevent this.

⚠️ Not Suitable for Everyone: Patients with severe enamel defects including tooth decay, or pregnancy may not be able to whiten their teeth.

Pros, Cons & Risks of In-Chair whitening

Our goal isn’t just a brighter smile; it’s a healthier, more informed approach to whitening. If you’re curious about the science or want to discuss your options, we’re happy to share the studies and reasoning behind our methods.

At Vere Dental in Battersea, we offer in-chair Philips Zoom Whitening as a fast, dentist-supervised option for patients seeking immediate results.

Just like our home whitening system we include the use of GC Tooth Mousse and high-fluoride toothpaste.

Is Whitening My Teeth Dangerous?

If you’ve ever considered brightening your smile, you’ve probably come across conflicting information about the safety of teeth whitening.

At Vere Dental here in Battersea, we understand that your safety and confidence are paramount.

The truth is, when performed under professional supervision in a scientific way either in the UK or Europe, teeth whitening is both safe and effective.

Let’s explore why—and how we ensure your experience is as risk-free as possible.

The Safety of Professional Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most researched and regulated cosmetic dental treatments in the UK and Europe. Unlike unregulated at-home kits or DIY trends as well as certain whitening toothpastes, dentist-supervised whitening follows strict guidelines and scientifically backed protocols to protect your oral health.

Regulated Products

Only dental professionals can legally provide whitening treatments using high-concentration peroxide gels (such as hydrogen or carbamide peroxide).

These products are correctly tested and approved for safety when used correctly. Our dentists and Hygienists at Vere Dental, we use Philips Zoom Whitening and customised at-home whitening kits that comply with these regulations, ensuring you receive a treatment that’s both effective and safe.

Professional Oversight

One of the biggest risks of unsupervised whitening is overuse or incorrect application, which can lead to deterioration of your enamel, tooth sensitivity, gum irritation, and in extreme cases loss of tooth vitality. When you whiten your teeth at our Battersea practice, with Amandine, Alex, or Stef, they:

Assesses your oral health before treatment to ensure you’re a suitable candidate.

Customises the whitening process to your needs, whether it’s in-chair Zoom whitening or a supervised at-home programme.

Monitor your progress and adjusts the treatment to minimise sensitivity.

Protection for Your Teeth and Gums

We take extra steps to safeguard your smile:

  • Gum protection: During in-chair whitening, we use gingival barriers to shield your gums from the whitening gel. We also make our own whitening trays. With the knowledge we gather during your check-ups, we make sure to make the whitening trays as safe as possible for your gums and teeth.
  • Fluoride and remineralisation: We prescribe high-fluoride toothpaste and Casein containing Tooth Mousse to strengthen your enamel, reduce sensitivity, and increase the results of your whitening.
  • Post-whitening care: Our team provides clear instructions on maintaining your results while keeping your teeth healthy.

Addressing Common Concerns

Tooth Sensitivity

Mild sensitivity is the most common side effect of whitening, but it’s usually temporary. However, with our approach, most of our patients find the process comfortable.

Enamel Damage

A persistent myth is that whitening damages tooth enamel. In reality, professional whitening does not weaken enamel permanently when done correctly. We improve protection of your enamel with remineralising agents like CPP-ACP (casein) high fluoride toothpaste, Bi-Fluoride varnish etc.

Gum Irritation

Gum irritation can occur if whitening gels come into contact with soft tissues. This is why professional application is key. Our clinicians at Vere Dental will use precise techniques to isolate your gums and as mentioned above, we will try to make sure the whitening trays fit your teeth so leaking of the gel towards the gums is as  minimal as possible.
